After almost 14 years, the High Court of Bombay finally ordered the Cricket Control Council in India (BCCI) to pay 538 Brooding inr to the owners of the Kochi Tuskers, now disappeared, from the unjustified franchise of the unjustified termination of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise, which only played the 2011 season, was suddenly terminated by the BCCI for an alleged breach of contract.
The Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise, which was trained in 2010, jointly belonged to an association under Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL) and Rendezvous Sports World (RSW). The team made its debut in IPL 2011, finishing eighth under the captain of Mahela Jayawardene and featuring players like Brendon McCullum, Steve Smith, VVS Laxman and Ravira will Jadeja.
However, the passage of the franchise in the league was interrupted in September 2011 when the BCCI put an end to its agreement, citing the failure of the offer of a compulsory banking guarantee. The decision led KCPL and RSW to initiate negotiation procedures, declaring that the termination was illegal. On June 18, 2025, judge Riyaz I. Chagla of the High Court of Bombay confirmed the arbitration prices previously given in 2015, ordering the BCCI to compensate for the KCPL with 385.50 INR and RSW crore with 153.34 INR.
“The court has confirmed the arbitration. It now belongs to the BCCI if it has to contest the verdict before the Supreme Court. The BCCI has time up to six weeks,” the BCCI lawyer told Cricbuzz.
Rejecting the request of the BCCI under article 34 of the arbitration and conciliation law, judge Chagla judged that arbitration had been carried out fairly and within the legal limits.
“I am considered the fact that there are no valid reasons raised in the petition of KCPL and the petition of the RSW under article 34 of the arbitration law to justify an interference with the KCPL sentence and the RSW sentence, which was condemned there. 1753 of 2015 are devoid of merit and are therefore rejected.
The court also noted that the BCCI invocation of the banking guarantee was equivalent to a rejected violation of the franchise agreement and, consequently, the Kochi Tuskers were entitled to the damages granted.
