Morehead State renounces his stadium for the former student Phil Simms, who quarterly the Giants of New York at a victory in the Super Bowl XXI.
The official dedication will take place at the Stade de Morehead, in Kentucky, during the weekend of return on October 18.
Simms played for the 1974 to 1978 program. The native of Kentucky passed for 5,545 yards and 32 affected during his career and was appointed player of the year of the Ohio Valley conference in 1977.
“Phil Simms has remained faithful to MSU over the years,” said sports director Kelly Wells. “He gave Msu his time, his talent and his treasure in Msu since his days as an university adhesive. He visited Morehead during the summers to accommodate summer camps for young athletes and encouraged them to consider MSU.
“He has supervised MSU coaches and players over the years. More notable, he has organized many fundraising events and has personally contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the football program. This recognition is the most deserving and long awaited.”
The Giants drafted him with the seventh choice in total in 1979 and he stayed with the team throughout his last NFL season in 1993. The selection twice Pro Bowl ranks second in the history of the passing franchise (33,462) and Touché passes (199).
He was appointed MVP of New York 39-20 victory against Denver’s Broncos in the Super Bowl XXI, finishing 22 of the 25 passes for 268 yards with three touchdown and zero interceptions.
Simms obtained a second ring with the Giants in the Super Bowl XXV when his replacement of injury, Jeff Hostetler, led the team to a 20-19 victory against the Buffalo Bills.
Simms, which is 70 years old in November, returned to campus in 2015 to receive his baccalaureate. The university also presented him with an honorary doctorate.
After his player career, Simms spent three decades in the broadcasting stand.
