New Delhi: The sparkling form of the Kings of the Kings of Punjab, Shreyas Iyer, this season IPL has rekindled his return speech, with the team’s spin coach, Sunil Joshi, attributing the resurgence to the “hunger of challenges” of Iyer. Since his release by Kolkata Knight Riders despite the leading to the IPL 2024 title, Iyer responded in style with undefeated blows of 97 and 52 to start the 2025 season.

“If you look back the contribution of Shreyas from the Champions Trophy, it has become more coherent, especially against Spin,” said Joshi before the shock of the Kings of Punjab against Kkr. “He accepts each challenge, each ball. It is the state of mind of a better player.”

“He showed hunger and he is ready to accept all the challenges he takes up. For any player in this caliber, you accept each challenge, each ball. I am sure he did a great job behind the scenes. It is a good momentum to be postponed as a leader,” added Joshi.

Iyer was a pillar in the average order of India during the 2025 champions trophy, with an average of 48.60 with two fifties in five games. Its resurgence was fed both by mental resolution and technical adjustments – in particular, a more open position and a deeper positioning in the fold to counter the short ball.

Joshi also underlined the evolution of Iyer leadership. “He speaks to each player – even nets of net. This strengthens confidence and shows his care for the team. This is a characteristic of a real leader.”
Despite his return to Eden Gardens, where he raised the IPL trophy last year, Iyer showed no sign of emotional overmultiplia. “Each match is important. The approach remains the same – playing to win,” said Joshi.
While speculation continues on the potential recall of Iyer in India for the tour in England, Joshi chose to keep the accent on the IPL. “Remember at IPL. I am not the right person to talk about the national selection.”
