Pomona City in South California to host cricket during the 2028 Olympic Games

Dubai: The South-Californian city of Pomona will host the cricket competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the ICC announced.

The cricket, which returns to the Olympic Games after 128 years, will showcase six teams each in male and female competitions and will be held at the Fair field in Pomona.

The city is located 48 km from Los Angeles, which is the main place of the games.

Fairgrounds or Fairplex, as it is better known, is an installation that is used for conventions, and commercial, educational and sports events (mainly motorsport) throughout the year. There is no designated cricket field on the site.

“We welcome the announcement of the cricket site in Los Angeles 2028, because this is an important step towards preparing the return of our sport at the Olympic Games,” said CPI president Jay Shah, in a statement on Tuesday evening.

“Although cricket is an extremely popular sport, it will be a fantastic opportunity to extend the traditional limits when it appears at the Olympic Games in the T20 format at the rapid and exciting rate which should appeal to new audiences.”

The cricket, which made its only appearance at the Olympic Games at the Paris Games in 1900, was included in the Los Angeles Olympic Games program after the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee in Mumbai in October 2023.

Cricket joined five new sports in La28, including baseball / softball, Football Flag, Crosse (Six) and squash.

The T20 format, recognized as the vehicle for the growth of the game by the ICC, has also appeared in other multi-sport events in recent years.

Asian games in 2010, 2014 and 2023 presented male and female T20 competitions while the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games organized a woman’s competition.
