Jasprit Bumrah could appear at oval despite being available only for 3 of the 5 tests.

Jasprit Bumrah remains in contention to feature in the IND vs ENG 5th Test contrary to reports. Bumrah was deemed fit enough to feature only in 3 of the 5 Tests in the India vs England series. While the Indian spearhead featured in his 3rd match of the tour in Manchester, he could still be in the mix revealed captain Shubman Gill.

Pitch is green, we’ll see: Shubman Gill on Jasprit Bumrah for 5th Test

England announced their Playing XI ahead of the Oval Test but Shubman Gill guarded his secrets ahead of the final game of the series. India are already without vice-captain Rishabh Pant due to a fractured foot. The availability of Jasprit Bumrah remains a question.

The BCCI medical team and the selectors had considered that Bumrah would only play 3 Tests in England to manage his workload better. The Indian spearhead had played all 5 Tests in Australia and needed a surgery which ruled him out for 4 months. Bumrah bowled 33 overs in Manchester and clearly looked fatigued with his pace dropping considerably.

Despite that, there remains hope he features at The Oval. India are trailing 2-1 and have the opportunity to level the series against an England side sans Ben Stokes.

“We will take a decision tomorrow. Wicket looks very green, so let’s see,” Shubman Gill told the reporters ahead of the IND vs ENG 5th Test.

Jasprit Bumrah won't play IND vs ENG 5th Test in London; Akash Deep to replace him

After the Manchester Test, coach Gautam Gambhir had confirmed Bumrah was available for the 5th test. The 31-year-old did not since the morning of Day 4 in Manchester and it is hoped that an additional day’s rest would have eased his case.

Should Bumrah not feature, Akash Deep would return to the XI. Deep starred in India’s win at Edgbaston with a 10-wicket haul. However an injury ruled him out in Manchester. Anshul Kamboj struggled on debut and will make way. Bumrah is India’s joint leading wicket taker in the series. In his absence, Mohammed Siraj has led the attack.

12 thoughts on “Shubman Gill keeps close cards on the selection of Jasprit Bumrah for Ind Vs Eng 5th Test”
  1. I disagree with leaving Bumrah out, he bring yorkers and pressure against English middle order, and you risking by not having him. The team should clear the deck and choose him if fit, not leave him on a rumor cloud. Management may fear re-injury or want to keep tempo with other bowlers, but that isn’t a good reason to delay a clear decision.

  2. This post got more suspense than a soap opera, I need popcorn. Gill is playing card shark, Bumrah stays in the wings until the crowd start to chant; by then we will see the XI.

  3. This is silly, it cause confusion and rumor, we deserve direct update from team management. If we drop Bumrah due to minor niggle just to present a mystery, the confidence go down, not go up. The 5th Test is crucial and we need crisp choices, not this murky secrecy.

  4. Oh great, keep Bumrah for the 5th Test and call it close cards; the suspense is the real performance here. Nothing screams readiness like a last minute call, right?

  5. Love this approach, Gill keep the cards close, Bumrah is key when fit, this wait show smart planning. If Bumrah is firing, England will feel the pressure from both ends. I back the cautious strategy and hope the healing goes well before that 5th Test.

  6. Oh the drama, ‘close cards’ again, as if this is the only thing that matters in cricket; Bumrah’s fitness will decide the match, not the suspense created by the selectors; what a twist.

  7. From what we can see, close cards often mean final call comes closer to match day, allowing fitness checks and last minute juggling. In past tours, teams prefer to avoid tipping their bench until last moment to keep opposition guessing. So the story around Bumrah likely means plan is for a late decision based on his injury status. The managers will check speed, pain, and fielding readiness before locking the XI, not a simple yes or no.

  8. If Gill is really thinking to preserve Bumrah, it makes sense but we need to balance risk and reward. The Eng batsmen are used to facing Bumrah, so not playing him earlier could put us at disadvantage, and the other bowlers need to cover the rest. I argue that a late, clear decision helps team chemistry and keeps fans morale from drooping.

  9. I not sure this secrecy help our selection, feels like delaying the obvious. Fans want clarity and this air around Bumrah is just confusion for the squad, may backfire if Eng reads cues too well.

  10. Very positive take, this approach shows trust in the squad and patience in the process. It sends a message that we not rushing Bumrah back, we calculating risk and maximizing impact. A fully match-fit Bumrah can be game changer, so take time and ensure health first.

  11. Informative note: in tests the team not reveal all selection until just before match, so ‘close cards’ is common. Bumrah status is often updated through pressers; this is not unusual. Expect a confirm closer to day before the game depending on practice and pain threshold.

  12. Sure, the ‘close cards’ strategy totally fixes everything, we reached the zenith of planning. I’m sure Eng will be quaking in their boots waiting for an announcement that may drop on match day, because that always work.
