One of Chennai Super Kings, Dewald Brevis, has become the center of a huge DRS controversy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. Brevis, facing Lungi Ngidi on his very first ball, incurred a golden duck after receiving LBW by the referee on the field. It seemed that the referee made an error with the call, which caused the signal of a review of the young CSK paste. However, the South African had a broken heart after being informed that time to review the call was exhausted.

While the ball was hitting his pads, it seemed to be going down the side of the leg, but Brevis took his time and held a discussion with the non-attacker Jadeja before reporting the DRS. However, a review could not be taken. He and Jadeja even had a brief argument with the referee on the field after being informed that the clock had exhausted.

The reruns later showed that the ball went down the side of the leg and lacked the stumps with a large margin. The incident has not only raised questions about the DRS timer, but also the referee’s call on the ground to give in first.

It seemed that Brevis was unable to see the DRS timer on the screen, therefore, it was thought that he had time to discuss the decision of the referee with Jadeja before going upstairs. But, it turned out that he had lacked time.

The controversy of the DRS proved to be fatal for CSK while the franchise underwent a 2 -point defeat against RCB to stay at the bottom of the 2025 point table. The Super Kings failed in the pursuit of the race despite the heroic performances of Ayush Mhatre and ravaged Jadeja, who scored 94 and 77 not out, respectively.

With the home victory, RCB finished a very first double on CSK in an IPL season, after having already won the reverse match in Chepauk.
