The favorite of the house, Paula Badosa, withdrew before her second round match Friday at the Madrid Open due to a back injury.

The Spanish of ninth seeded was replaced by the lucky loser and compatriot Cristina Bucsa for the match with Russia Veronika Kudermetova.

Badosa, 27, said before the start of the WTA 1000 tournament that she was still troubled by problems that have tormented her in the past two years.

“My back is good, improves slowly,” she told Wtatennis.com. “It was a difficult injury, honestly, it because it was totally different from the last. It was an injury that touched the nerves, so I was constantly suffering from pain.

“My normal life was a disaster, honestly – I couldn’t even leave the sofa.”

Badosa won four single titles during the WTA tour, more recently in August in Washington, DC, she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open of this year for her best event in a Grand Chelem event.
