The government of Karnataka provides for a new 60,000 -seat stadium in Bengaluru

Deputy Minister of Chief of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, announced that the government of the State had developed plans to help build a new stadium in Bengaluru with a capacity of 60,000 seats. The initiative aims to alleviate congestion and improve the management of crowds during large -scale public events.

Although the exact location has not yet been disclosed, Shivakumar has confirmed that an appropriate plot of land had been identified and that complete details will be shared soon.

“We have finalized land for a new stadium in Bengaluru. The capacity proposed is 60,000 seats. More information will be shared shortly,” Shivakumar told journalists.

This decision comes in the wake of a tragic stampede during the royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 Victory celebrations near Mr. Chinnaswamy’s stadium on June 4, which made 11 lives and left several other injured.

The incident sparked general indignation through the state, with strong criticism of the authorities for inadequate crowd control. The Chinnaswamy stadium, located in the heart of the city, has long been under pressure during the main cricket matches and public gatherings due to space constraints.

Although the official stadium capacity is 35,000, more than three Lakh fans would have gathered around the site during RCB celebrations, far exceeding official estimates and the ability of the place. A lack of adequate police staff and a limited preparation time contributed to the jostling, leading to a chaotic and deadly crush.

Following the government of the State has taken disciplinary measures which include the suspension of several senior police officials, including the Bengaluru police commissioner. The tragedy sparked a political storm on administrative breaches and the need for better infrastructure for managing crowds.

“Kempegowda has considered a world -class Bengaluru. With its vision as our inspiration, we are committed to improving this city,” added Shivakumar.
