After joining for their most dramatic victory in the young season, the Rays of Tampa Bay are targeting a division of their four games series against New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon.
Tampa Bay took a losing skipping of four games with a 10-8 victory on Saturday when Jonathan Arianda hit a two-round circuit in 10th round. The Rays forced additional rounds after matching the match with four points at the end of ninth against the Yankees closer to Devin Williams.
Yandy Diaz had three strokes and two points produced and Ben Rortvedt rolled in two points for the Rays, which ended a goalless sequence of 17 rounds earlier in the match.
“I do not know how many games to win you have in April, but it was starting to feel this, that we had to find a way to win,” said Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash.
New York finished its sequence of five consecutive victories despite another solid performance by star Aaron Judge, who had three strokes and three points produced, giving him 25 points produced through 21 games.
The Yankees seemed to have the control match in the ninth round before Tampa Bay rallied against Williams, who granted nine points (eight deserved) in nine appearances (eight sleeves) this season.
“Obviously, a difficult,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “Many good things to approach the finish line, then it simply did not bounce there obviously in the ninth. Hard, but these will happen. Sub-dust and prepare to try to finish a good series (Sunday).”
The right-hander Ryan Pepiot (1-2, 4.91 ERA) should start for Tampa Bay against the left-hander of New York Max Fried (3-0, 1.88) in the final of the series.
Pepiot seeks to bounce back after having abandoned six points on nine safe in six rounds with a 7-4 defeat against the Boston Red Sox last Tuesday.
“It was as if they were on everything,” said Pepiot. “Strong the ball in the other direction, hit the bullets hard, the circuits – it was just like everything they hit missing our guys. That (stinking). You never want to have these days.”
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is without a sure blow in eight at-bats against Pepiot, who makes his second career start against New York. He gave one point in 5 2/3 innings in a 5-3 victory against the Yankees on July 9, 2024.
Fried won his third consecutive departure last Tuesday, granting two points with seven stick withdrawals in 6 2/3 rounds in a 4-2 victory against the Kansas City Royals.
“He runs,” said Anthony Volpe, the Yankees Corner Stop. “You see the swings, and these are very good strikers that he really gives an unbalanced look.”
Fried, 31, abandoned a total of nine points (five deserved) with a ratio of 28 to 5 to borrow during its first four departures in 24 rounds.
Fried has a 2-0 sheet with an MPM of 0.66 in two career starts covering 13 2/3 rounds against Tampa Bay.
The Yankees monitor the status of the designated striker Ben Rice, who left the match on Saturday with an enthusiast of the left elbow after being struck by a field for the second time in the competition. The Yankees announced that the X -rays were negative.
