The Tigers Left-Rander Tarik Skubal for a second consecutive prize in the American League Cy Young continues on Sunday, when Detroit ends a series of three games at the Cleveland Guardians.
Skubal (10-2, 2.15 ERA) faces the right-hander Guardians Gavin Williams (5-4, 3.86) in what should be one of the hottest days of the year in the northeast of Ohio with temperatures at the stadium in the mid-90s.
The Tigers won the 2-1 opening on the Wenseel Perez and Zach McKinstry circuits, then won a 1-0 victory on Saturday, thanks to a solo shot from Spencer Torkelson.
Detroit, leader of the American League, only managed two strokes in the second victory – both of Torkelson – while sending Cleveland to his ninth consecutive defeat of the season.
“We have won the series, so we don’t care about our explosive or our way of doing so, especially within the division,” said Tigers manager AJ Hinch. “Tork will try to do damage every time he takes a swing, and he does it. It is difficult to challenge his approach.”
Skubal made nine regular season starts against Cleveland, compiling a 3-2 and 2.84 MPM file with 57 stick withdrawal in 50 2/3 rounds. He also went 0-1 with an MPM of 3.46 in two appearances on the road against the Guardians during the series of the Al 2024 division.
The start of the Detroit, Reese Olson, abandoned a Home Run to Jose Ramirez in his 4 1/3 of the sleeves presented on Friday, while his colleague Right Casey Mize did not allow a Basernner after the second goal on Saturday in his best performance in the majors.
Mize launched seven goals aimless for the initial period of his career, dispersing four strokes at a top of 102 throws. He has a strong chance of being appointed to the stars’ game when the reserves and launchers are announced after the final of the series.
“In a tight match like this, you feel like you really need to complete,” said Mize, who is 1-0 with a 0.75 MPM against Cleveland this season. “This is not the best situation to do, but I love them a little, to be honest.
“I know that if the match is there, AJ will give me the chance to stay and succeed.”
Williams will face the tigers for the fifth time of his three seasons, displaying a file of 1-2 and 2.53 MPM during his first four departures against the rival of the central division.
Nothing went well for the Guardians since June 25, when they beat the Blue Jays of Toronto 5-4 in 10 rounds. They were upgraded 41-13 and were bleached five times during their nine consecutive defeats.
Even a combined Saturday of two strikers by Logan Allen, Cade Smith, Paul Sewald and Tim Herrin was not enough to end the slippage.
“It will bear fruit and we will see ourselves in an ideal place at the end of the season,” said Cleveland launcher Slade Cecconi. “I fully believe it.”
The best news for the Guardians came before the match on Saturday, when the former winner of the Al Cy Young Prize, Shane Bieber, launched the practice of the striker. The right -hander could join the rotation at the end of July after Tommy John surgery.
“Regarding what my arm felt, I’m really happy with the way it happened,” said Bieber. “But as a competitor, I am just tired and thrown a few more bullets than I would have liked. Now I can focus on how I can improve for my next BP live.”
