New Delhi: He came, he saw, he conquered – that’s exactly how 14 years Vaibhav Suryavanshi Illuminated the Sawai Mansingh stadium, leaving fans in admiration with its majestic game and its swirling century. In return, the crowd roars in celebration, applauding strongly for the young feeling of Samastipur, Bihar.
On Monday, the last prodigy of the Rajasthan Royals striker engraved his name in the history of the IPL by becoming the youngest player to score a century in the tournament, achieving the feat at only 14 years and 32 days. Suryavanshi has made his way around a hundred blister on only 35 bullets, hammering 11 six and seven four – the fastest second century in the history of IPL. He finally left after marked a superb 101 deliveries out of 38.
His sensational blow came against the IPL 2022 champions Gujarat titansWho had displayed a formidable goal of 210. In response, the Royals of Rajasthan accessed victory, chasing the total with ease, reaching 212 for two in just 15.5 overs.
The sleeves of Suryavanshi not only marked the fastest century IPL by an Indian, but also made him the youngest to reach a hundred in the history of the League. The supporter at the other end, Yashasvi Jaiswal anchored the pursuit with an undefeated undefeated balls.
Earlier in the day, the Gujarat Titans had climbed the 84 of Captain Shubman Gill and the 50 undefeated of Jos Buttler to display 209 for four.
The record for the fastest century in the history of IPL, however, still belongs to the Grand des Antilles Chris Gayle, who broke a ton of 30 balls for the royal benggaluru against Pune Warriors in April 2013.
At an age when most adolescents are busy indulging in their favorite meals, Suryavanshi has made notable sacrifices for his cricket ambitions – abandoning her two favorites, pizza and sheep. His discipline and concentration already harvest rich rewards.
“Mutton Naha Khana Hai Usko, Hain Instructions. Pizza Hata Diya Hai Uske Dietetics Chart Mein [Mutton is not allowed for him as per the instructions. Pizza has been removed from his diet chart]. He just likes chicken and sheep. He’s a child, so he really liked pizza. But he doesn’t eat it anymore. When we gave him sheep, no matter how much we have given, he would finish everything. This is why he looks a little joufflu, “said coach Manish Ojha to Timesofindia.com in an exclusive interview.
“He will go very far. We have seen the way he started the sleeves, and I can promise you – he will get a big score in the games to come.”
“He is an intrepid striker. He has repeatedly said that he admires Brian Lara. But it is a mixture of Yuvraj Singh and Brian Lara. His assault is like that of Yuvraj,” he added.
The struggle
Suryavanshi was born on March 27, 2011 – the same year, India raised the World Cup under the direction of MS Dhoni. Now, at only 14, he has already played five first class games for the Bihar during the 2024-25 national season.
His cricket trip started early.
He was only four years old when his father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, a farmer, noticed him, breaking a plastic ball with great power and timing.
After a long day in the fields, Sanjeev would throw their son’s deliveries of armpits and they would play together. Finally, Sanjeev created a small training area in their backyard, giving a Vaibhav space to perfect his skills.
Impressed by his son’s passion and commitment, Sanjeev took Vaibhav to Brajesh Jha, his first coach, in an academy in Samastipur. After a training under JHA, they made another significant movement – this time in Patna, where Manish Ojha helped to further shape Vaibhav’s cricket capacities.
The 90 km trip from Samastipur to Patna was not an easy task, but Sanjeev was determined. He bought a car and would lead his son to the Academy. Vaibhav trained under Ojha on alternative days.
At the age of 14, Suryavanshi had already become a great force in various local Bihar tournaments.
Whether it is the Heman trophy, the Vinoo Mankad trophy, the Challengers (U-19) trophy (U-19), or the ACC Asian Cup for 19, Vaibhav has checked each style box, moving regularly in the ranks to reach this significant level in his career.
“He was a dominant striker every time he came to the fold. He was patient for his turn. He played in the eighth match of the Royals of Rajasthan. Of course, nobody wants to sit in the canoe and watch the others play. He also can’t wait to go out in the middle, but I told him to be patient, to continue to learn and to wait for his luck.
