His remarks are involved in the midst of continuous political tensions that have blocked bilateral series between India and Pakistan for years, even if the teams continue to compete in ICC and ACC tournaments.

Azhar also discussed the recent withdrawal of Indian veterans from their Legends League match against Pakistan in the World Legends Championship (WCL).“This is a question for the board of directors and the government,” he said.“The Veterans League is not official, it is not sanctioned by the ICC or the BCCI. It is directed in private. But the Asian Cup is an ACC-governed tournament,” he said, moving the WCL from official cricket diplomacy.

  1. Azhar bhai is absolutly right. If we cant play bilateral series then whats the point of meeting in tournaments only?? This is just hypocricy at its best. Either play all formats or dont play at all.

  2. Complete nonsense!! Indo-Pak matches brings lot of revenue to ICC and both boards. Why will they stop?? Money talks louder then anything else in cricket now days. Azharuddin should knows this better.

  3. So according to this logic we should skip Asia Cup and World Cup just because we dont play bilateral?? HAHAHAHA what a joke. Next he will say dont play IPL because some players are from that country.

  4. This debate is going on from so many years now and nothing will change. Government decides these things not cricket board or players. Azhar should understand ground reality before making such statements in media.

  5. Its interesting point actually. From financial perspective, India-Pakistan matches in Asia Cup or World Cup generates massive viewership – approximately 300-400 million viewers globally. Bilateral series would generate even more over 5-7 matches but political tensions makes it impossible since 2012-13.

  6. This is most stupid statement ever heard. Politics and sport are two differnt things but some people cant understand simple logic.

  7. LOL so we should also not play World Cup then? What kind of logic is this yaar… ICC tournaments are different from bilateral, everyone knows.

  8. The real issue here is not about playing or not playing. Its about how cricket has become tool for political messaging. Both nations loses when we dont have regular cricket between them. Young generation of players dont get exposure and rivalry loses its intensity over time.

  9. I am disagree completely. Tournament cricket have different meaning and importance. Its not same as bilateral series where only two countries involved. In tournaments whole asia or world is participating so dynamic is differnt altogether.

  10. Wah wah Azhar saab! First solve your own controversies then give advice to others lol. People in glass houses shouldnt throw stones na??

  11. Oh yes, great idea! Lets also boycott Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth etc because we have some political issues. Why stop at cricket only? Maybe we should not breath the same air also? Such wisdom, much wow!
