Gill had scored 619 points in the first seven rounds and needed 74 points to pass the count of Virat Kohli and 81 points to set the mountain of 700 points.

Shubman Gill has joined an elite club. The current India captain has become just the third player after Sunil Gavaskar and Yashasvi Jaiswal to score 700 runs in a Test series. Gill had already made a strong move earlier in the series, scoring a whopping 430 runs at Edgbaston.

Despite scoring 147, 161, and 269 in three different innings, this knock might be Gill’s best of the India vs England Test series. Not only were Team India 1-2 down in the series, but they were also trailing by 311 runs to avoid a series defeat. As if this wasn’t hard enough, Chris Woakes had reduced them to 0-2 in the first 5 balls of the third innings.

Gill had to come out in the 1st over itself. From there, Gill and KL Rahul went on and on. Whether it be Jofra Archer’s speed, Woakes’ accuracy, or Liam Dawson’s tight bowling, both were unwayward. Gill had been tested by Woakes and Archer in the opening spell, but once he passed that test, nothing seemed to bother him.

With a boundary down the leg, Gill broke Virat Kohli’s record of 692 runs and became the fourth-highest run-scorer for India in a Test series. The 700-mark wasn’t far away, but Gill had a job to do. That was staying unbeaten until the fourth day’s play ended. He and Rahul had batted for 60 overs without losing a wicket; they weren’t going to give in now.

The record clearly wasn’t in Gill’s mind. It didn’t matter that he had to wait 17 hours to reach the 700-run club. With a double off Ben Stokes’ first ball of the second innings, Gill got there finally.

  1. In our days Gavaskar did without helmets and modern bats and facilities. Now everyone wants to compare modern players with legends. Show some respect to past greats please.

  2. Amazing achivement by Shubman! Only 24 years old and already breaking records. This boy is future of indian cricket no doubt. Kohi himself will be proud of him i think.

  3. For those who dont know, the other two indians are Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli. Gavaskar scored 774 runs against West Indies in 1971. Kohli had 692 in England 2018 series. Now Gill has crossed 700 mark which is extraordinery achievement for any batsman.

  4. People forgetting that Kohli scored his runs in England which is most difficult place for asian batsmen. Where is Gill scoring? Home conditions! Big difference my friends. Apples and oranges comparison.

  5. Why we comparing him with Kohli already? Kohli has 29 test hundreds, Gill has what 5-6? Lets not get ahead of ourselfs here. Yes good performance but calm down people.

  6. Technically he didnt beat Kohlis record, he beat Kohlis series total. The actual record is still with Gavaskar at 774. But yes impressive nonetheless from young Gill.

  7. Sure, and tomorrow he’ll probably walk on water too. The way media is hyping him its like he already won world cup single handedly 😏

  8. Next match he’ll score 800 runs in single test series probably. I mean why stop at 700 when media already crowned him as next Don Bradman 🤣

  9. Wow just wow!! This generation is lucky to witness such talent. The way he plays spin and pace both is just class apart. Looking forward to his century in next match!!

  10. Everyone hyping him too much. One good series doesnt make you legend. Lets see if he can do this consistantly or not. Kohli did this multiple times thats why he is king.

  11. This is what happens when young players work hard and stay dedicate. No shortcut to success. Well done Shubman keep it up maintain your form and fitness both are important.
