Stronger Matt Martin, who spent all his 16 seasons in the NHL, except two, with the New York Islanders, retired on Tuesday and was appointed special assistant to general manager Mathieu Darche.

Martin, 36, collected two assists and 82 strokes in 32 games last season for the Icelanders, who selected him in the fifth round of the NHL 2008 recovery. He played a brief passage of two years with the Maple Leafs of Toronto (2016-18) between his years in New York.

For his career, Martin recorded 178 points (81 goals, 97 assists), 1,168 minutes of penalty and 3,931 strokes in 987 regular season games. He also collected 13 points (eight goals, five assists) in 88 playoffs.

Martin led the League for success for five consecutive seasons (2011-16) and is second in the history of the NHL in this category behind the former teammate Calterbuck (4,029).

The Icelanders, which went 35-35-12 (82 points) and missed the playoffs last season, have the n ° 1 choice in the 2025 draft, which begins on Friday.
