Gilbert (3-3, 3.07 ERA), an All-Star in 2024 when he led the majors with 208 2/3 sleeves launched, will have his eighth departure for seven missed weeks with a tension of the right elbow.
Seattle won the last two departures of Gilbert, a decision without a decision in an 8-4 victory against Detroit, central leader of the American League, then a 1-0 victory against the co-leader of the National League Milwaukee. During these two games, Gilbert granted eight strokes and no deserved race on 11 combined rounds of 11/3 and withdrawing 19.
Gilbert in particular was impressive during his last outing Tuesday, exceeding Jacob Miriorowski from the Brewers. He granted two strokes and withdrew 10 1/3 rounds in this 1-0 victory.
“I think it was probably the best we saw this year, just the way he attacked, what he had, in control of this ball game,” said Mariners manager Dan Wilson. “All around, it was just a big ball game by him.
“I think it’s huge for him.”
Gilbert has a 4-3 file with an MPM of 3.63 in 10 career starts against the angels, including 4-1 with an MPM of 4.10 in seven departures at the Anaheim stadium.
Seattle won two of the first three games in the series, including a 7-2 victory on Saturday evening who saw the recipient Cal Raleigh Club his major league leading the 40th circuit to break 2-2 equality in the sixth, and Julio Rodriguez Homer for the fourth time in three games.
Raleigh became the first recipient and also the first switch in the history of the major league to strike 40 circuits before the end of July. He also became the seventh recipient different to reach 40 circuits in a season, joining Johnny Banc and Mike Piazza – who did it twice – Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley, Javy Lopez and Salvador Perez.
“This is a cool step to take and I am very grateful,” said Raleigh. “A cool moment for sure. I think when I was 30 years old, it was cool, and 40 is certainly very cool.
“The season and the figures he has set up is quite amazing,” said Wilson. “It is only another of these notches on his belt.”
Meanwhile, Rodriguez spoke in three consecutive games for the second time this month while Randy Arozarena hit his 12th circuit in 22 games and now has 20 in a season for the fifth consecutive year.
The right-hander Kyle Hendricks (5-7, 4.92 ERA) will try to help the angels save a split in the series. Hendricks is 1-0 with an MPM of 3.75 in two career starts against Seattle. This victory occurred on June 6 this season when he granted four points in eight strokes in six rounds in a 5-4 victory in the Angel Stadium.
The angels lost for the fifth time in six games on Saturday. Taylor Ward was one of the rare light points, hitting his 24th circuit in the second round to give the team a short-term lead 1-0.
Los Angeles put Chris Taylor (hand) and Jorge Soer (rear) on the injured list before the match on Saturday, and the third base player Yoan Moncada left in sixth round after taking a quick bullet of 96.4 MPH George Kirby out of his right hand. The X -rays were negative for a fracture and the acting director Ray Montgomery said that Moncada was daily.
“I thought at the beginning that I had broken a finger (pink) broken because it was numb,” said Moncada.
“There is certainly a bullet there,” said Montgomery. “The radiographs were negative. … It hurts. We will see how it goes.”

For those wondering, Gilbert is 10-5 with a 3.21 ERA this season. He’s faced the Angels twice already this year with mixed results – one quality start and one where he gave up 5 runs in 4.2 innings. The Angels are batting .247 against him career wise.

Not sure why everyones so worried. The Angels lineup isn’t that scary without Trout at full strenght and Ohtani gone. Gilbert should handle them fine if he locates his fastbal properly.

This is a terrible decision. Gilbert has been gassed the last 3 starts, his velocity is down almost 2 mph. Why not go with Kirby who’s been way more consistant lately?? Makes zero sense to me.
